Obituary

It is with great love and sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved father, Charles Frederick Stechow.

Born on March 9, 1927, he lived through a tremendous amount of years and history in his 90+ years.  I can assure you, a kinder, more gentler spirit never walked the earth; if you knew him, your life was made better for it.  He's already missed, but we breathe deeply, knowing his long journey is finally complete. I can assure you that condolences are not necessary. No amount of tears can compete with the amount of love and laughs that he heaped upon everyone he knew.  I've scoured the dictionary in search of words that sufficiently encapsulate my admiration for him and his wonderful ways. None exist.  Know that he will be missed, remembered, and cherished to the end of my days.

Married in 1958 to his loving, late wife, Barbara, who predeceased him on May 9, 2015, they lead a long, happy marriage beginning and ending in Southeast Michigan, with chapters in Spring Hill, Florida and Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia along the way.  He leaves behind a son (me, Daniel), daughter-in-law Lori, and four step-grandchildren to carry on his legacy.

He worked for 42 years at Manufacturer's National Bank and in his extended retirement (29 years) he extracted more pension than most.  An avid reader, traveler, and DIY fixer of all broken things, he was the son of a machinist (Charles) and a homemaker (Helen) and one of five loving brothers, all of whom shared his easygoing ways and love of life.  No doubt heaven is a jollier place with all of them now reunited.

I can assure you that my mother greeted him in the Great Beyond with some tasty home cooking, a neat and tidy house and an earful about how he took too long to get there.  May they both rest in eternal peace, knowing how many lives they touched - especially mine.

A Celebration of Charles's life is being held on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at St John Neumann Catholic Church, located at 44800 Warren Road, in Canton, MI 48187 at 11am, with a right fine luncheon directly following.  For more details, contact me at dstechow@yahoo.com .  For now, join me in a boilermaker (a shot-in-a-beer - his favorite libation) in his honor.
