Dorothea "Doris" Kaluzny of Wheatfield, New York passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, September 27, 2020. She was 86 years old.
Dorothea was born in Augsburg, Germany in 1933. She met her late husband John J. Kaluzny while he was stationed at a nearby US Army base. The two were married in 1957. Dorothea and her daughter moved to Buffalo, NY with John later that year. Dorothea attended Bryant Stratton Business School in the evening. She would go on to earn her Bachelor of Arts at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1970. She earned her Master of Education in 1974, also at SUNY University of Buffalo.
Dorothea held many jobs over the course of her life. She was a teacher, tour guide at Niagara Falls, Insurance agent, document translator, Red Cross volunteer, short order cook as well as a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. She was known for her love of art, love of animals and hosting wonderful family gatherings full of laughter, good times, and great food.
Dorothea enjoyed the arts, theater and travel. She traveled extensively with John to 46 States and 7 countries. Among her favorite places to visit were US National Parks and the Caribbean. She had many hobbies, but her favorites were to paint, draw, sew, knit, and garden.
Dorothea is survived by her daughter Carol (Edward J) McCouch, and two grandsons Edward S. (Bonnie) McCouch and Matthew J. (Taryn) McCouch. She was also blessed with 3 great grandchildren: Arielle E. McCouch, Keira E. McCouch and Evan M. McCouch. She is also survived by her sister Edith (Gunther) Ostertag and brother Georg Weigel. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Helen (late John) Pirog, Patricia Panek, and Larry (Rose) Panek as well as many loving nieces and nephews both in the United States and Germany.
Dorothea's wish was for family and friends to remember her in their thoughts and prayers and to always love one another.
