Obituary

Edward J. Travis, Jr., "EJ the DJ", a proud Marine, dedicated railroad conductor, and beloved family patriarch, passed away leaving a legacy of service, loyalty, and love. Born on April 6, 1948, in Buffalo, New York, to Mary Ann (nee Schley) and Edward J. "Harp" Travis Sr., EJ embodied the strength and character of his hometown.

A man who served his country with honor, EJ was a United States Marine from 1966 to 1968. The discipline and pride he learned in the Corps remained with him throughout his life. He continued his life of service and hard work as a dedicated railroad conductor with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, Conrail, and CSX Transportation. His commitment to his fellow workers was further demonstrated through his role as Local Chairman of the United Transportation Union Local 1393.

EJ understood the value of community and fellowship. He was an active member of the Sts. Rita and Patrick Holy Name Society, American Legion Post 880, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a cherished regular and member of the Men's Clubs at McCarthy's, Top Hill, Smokey's Tavern, and the Swan Lounge, where his camaraderie and stories were a staple.

EJ's greatest source of pride and joy was his family. On his 21st birthday, April 6, 1969, he married his beloved wife, Nancy G. (nee Dengos), beginning a loving partnership that spanned over five decades. He was the devoted father of Denise (Mark) Adams and Edward III (Lisa) Travis. His role as "Papa" brought him immense happiness, he was the loving grandfather of Valerie Adams, Lindsay (Charles) Shelvay, Rebecca (Keanu Hopkins) Travis, and the late Edward Travis IV. His legacy continued to grow with his five great-grandchildren Noah, Sage, Cecily, Emma, and Amora.

EJ is also survived by his dearest cousin, Gregory Markey, and his caring sister-in-law, Lorraine (Donald) Brundage. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Linda Kirwan and brother-in-law of Rodney (Susan) Dengos. The family wishes to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to his devoted caretaker, Donna Green-Kolbert, and his faithful protector, Dexter, for their unwavering care and comfort.

The family will be present to receive friends and loved ones on Sunday, February 8th, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Pietszak Funeral Home, 2400 William Street (near Harlem Road), where a funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM.

Burial will be privately held at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna, New York.

EJ will be remembered as a Marine, a union man, a loyal friend, and, above all, a devoted family man. His memory will be a blessing and an inspiration to all who knew him. The memory of EJ will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him. His unwavering love for those close to him, paired with his gentle nature, will be fondly remembered. We invite you to honor his memory by sharing a picture or a favorite story in our online Guest Book on the Tribute page. Through these shared memories, EJ's enduring spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us all.
