Helen Pirog, a long-time Depew, NY resident died November 16, 2021, on a beautiful fall day. She was 95 years old.
Born Helen Kaluzny in Buffalo New York, she was a graduate of South Park High School and Bryant and Stratton Business School. She held various jobs in the Buffalo area at the Music Department of the Grosvenor Reference Library and later at St. James Catholic Church (now known as Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish) in Depew, New York. She married John A. Pirog, Jr. in 1950. They were together for 57 years until his death in June 2007.
She was primarily a homemaker and devoted her life to her home and family. She enjoyed her 5 children, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, crafting, the ducks and deer in her yard, fall foliage, the Erie County Fair, Garden Walks, and cooking/baking for others. Mrs. Pirog was a member of the former St. James Catholic Church in Depew, New York, and served as the President of the Parish Blessed Virgin Sodality for many years. She was also a Bingo volunteer and member of the Williamsville Home Bureau.
Survivors include two daughters, Christine (Phillip) Schmidt and Susan Knospe; three sons, Michael (Deborah) Pirog, Paul (Cynthia) Pirog and Robert Pirog; two brothers, the late John (late Dorothea) Kaluzny and Lawrence (Rose) Panek; and a sister Patricia Panek. Grandmother of Michael J. Pirog, Sarah Pirog, Mary Pirog, Thomas Pirog Sr., and Faith Knospe. Great Grandmother of Evan Fix and Arabella, Michaela and Thomas Jr. Pirog. Also survived by nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 21, 2021, from 3-7 PM at the PIETSZAK FUNERAL HOME, 2400 William St. (near Harlem) where services will be held on Monday, November 22. 2021 at 9 AM at Blessed Mother Teresa o f Calcutta Parish, located at 496 Terrace Blvd., in Depew, New York 14043 at 10 AM.
In Lieu of Flowers, Memorials in Helen's name may be made to Villa Maria Convent, 600 Doat St., Cheektowaga, NY 14211, or to the Alzheimer's Association, Western New York Chapter, 6215 Sheridan Dr #100, Buffalo, NY 14221.
One of Helen's wishes is for early detection of Pancreatic Cancer (November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month).
