Sister Mary Aileen, 90, a Felician Sister for 72 years, died in Buffalo General Hospital, Buffalo, NY, on June 16, 2016. The former Gertrude Madej was born on July 11, 1925, in Buffalo, NY. She entered the Buffalo Province of the Felician Sisters on July 6, 1943 and professed perpetual vows on August 6, 1951. After graduating from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy, Buffalo, NY, she furthered her education at Mount St. Joseph Teachers College, now known as Medaille College in Buffalo, NY, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Education degree.
Sister Aileen had the experience of teaching at all levels of education from Kindergarten to High School. At the onset of her ministry she taught Grade 2 at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary School in Buffalo, NY. She spent 15 years as a full time Catholic elementary school teacher in the Diocese of Buffalo. Her teaching extended to Catholic elementary schools within the Diocese of Syracuse for 9 years. In her teaching ministry, she emphasized the necessity of assuming personal responsibility for their studies to her students. In submitting her sentiments regarding teaching at her 70
th
anniversary of religious life she expressed being grateful for the gift of health that enabled her to teach and for the gift of having the pleasure to teach students who became priests and religious women.
In 1968, Sister Aileen began teaching English at Villa Maria Academy in Buffalo, NY. During her 11 year stay at the Academy, she also served as the Assistant Principal and Guidance Counselor. She also taught English at Notre Dame High School in Batavia, NY, for 5 years. Afterward, she returned to several elementary schools to serve as a librarian and education aide.
After experiencing some health issues, Sister Aileen resided at Villa Maria Infirmary Convent in 1988. She became the assistant to the Director of Ministry, primarily taking care of educational records. She assisted in this capacity for 18 years. She also served as a part- time sacristan.. On May 25, 2008, Sister Aileen became a patient in the Felician Sisters Health and Wellness Center, now known as Blessed Mary Angela Care Center, Buffalo, NY.
