Obituary

Sister Mary Camille Bet, 98, a Felician Sister for 79 years, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Holy Name of Mary Convent in Mississauga. A native of Buffalo, New York, the former Genevieve (Jean Marie) Bet, attended St. John Kanty's School where she was taught by the Felician Sisters. She desired to be a Felician Sister from an early age in elementary school. She entered the aspirancy of the Felician Sisters in 1940 and four years later completed her secondary education at Villa Maria Academy in Buffalo, New York. On August 22, 1944, she entered the community of the Felician Sisters in Immaculate Heart of Mary Province in Buffalo, New York and professed her final vows on August 6, 1952.

During Sister's 79 years of religious life, she ministered as a teacher of the primary grades for 13 years in Buffalo. In 1958, she was assigned to Canada and found she loved it here! Sister Camille ministered as a teacher and principal in the Catholic elementary schools in Streetsville, Mississauga, Fenwick, and Winona from 1958-1971.  From 1971-1976 she served as a teacher and principal at Holy Name of Mary High School. While working full-time, she took courses in the evenings or on Saturdays and obtained her Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees in 1958 from Medaille College, Buffalo. She received her Bachelor of Arts in 1964, and her Master's degree in 1969.

On February 12, 1974, Sister took her Canadian citizenship desiring to stay and serve in Canada. This day also marked Sister Camille's permanent transfer from the Buffalo Province to the Canadian Vice-Province.

Wherever Sister Camille served, she loved each ministry and put her all into her service. She was definitely open to Blessed Angela's motto, "Serve where you are needed". In 1976, Sister was called to minister as a general councillor in Rome, and served as the coordinator of formation and community life for the Congregation. Over the years, she attended many conferences, workshops, and courses to aid her in her ministries. She also facilitated various workshops and meetings for the sisters in formation. Upon returning to Canada, she was the formation director for one year, and then was elected as the provincial minister. She was then called back to Rome in 1990 and served as the congregational archivist until 2003. Sister was also the local minister at the generalate during her last six years there.

After returning to Holy Name of Mary Convent, Sister Camille once again served as local minister or local vicar for many years. She helped Sister Andrea Mazur in the archives, and ministered as the main liturgist/organist until recently. Throughout her various ministries and places of service, Sister Camille brought joy and shared her expertise in formation, liturgy, and Congregational history. Her deep love for the Felician community touched everyone she met.

Sister was predeceased by her parents, Stephen and Rose, and her sisters, Jessie and Jane, and her brothers, Alexander, Joseph and John.

The Felician Sisters express their sincere gratitude to the nursing staff from Acclaim Health, as well as to Dr. Tasneem Hussain, and Dr. Sittambalam for their great care and support.
