Sister Mary Joseph McDermott, CSSF, Seamstress

Sister Mary Joseph, 82, a Religious of the Order of the Blessed Sacrament of Our Lady (Sacramentine Sister) in Scarsdale, NY for 50 years and a Felician Sister for 13 years, died in the Blessed Mary Angela Care Center, Buffalo, NY, on Tuesday, October 27, 2015.   The former Annie Teresa McDermott was born on May 8, 1933 in Ireland. She entered the Order of the Blessed Sacrament of Our Lady in Scarsdale, NY, on September 8, 1952 where she professed perpetual vows on June 26, 1957. She began a probationary period as a transfer process with the Felician Sisters in Buffalo, NY, on September 29, 1999. After three years, SM Joseph was formally accepted in the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Felix and professed perpetual vows as a Felician Sister in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Province, Buffalo, NY, on October 24, 2002.

As a member of the Order of the Blessed Sacrament of Our Lady, Sister Joseph ministered in many ways. She assisted in the Academy cafeteria and helped with serving at the Book Store. She was the sacristan for most of her years at the monastery. She also baked altar breads, worked in the laundry, assisted in the dining room and was the receptionist. In addition, she cared for the sick, sewed, made crafts for the Christmas season and even made jellies and jams during the fruit season.

Sister Joseph lived with the Felician Sisters at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent in Buffalo, NY since September 1998. As a Felician, Sister Joseph assisted with many household tasks which included serving as receptionist. Her main ministry was serving as seamstress in the vestry, particularly for the sisters in the Blessed Mary Angela Care Center. She also graciously helped with Funeral Services for the sisters. Her main attraction to the Felician Sisters was the Eucharist, which is the heart of their consecrated life and the focal point of their spiritual heritage. She constantly reached out to many sisters in her own special way and was very gracious to others in the building.

On Thursday, October 8, 2015, Sister Joseph had successful triple bypass surgery. The day following she suffered a massive stroke after which her physical condition began to decline. She became a patient in the Blessed Mary Angela Care Center on October 21 and died six days later on the 27 th of October.
