Sister Mary Martinia Skokowski, CSSF, teacher
Sister Mary Martinia, 90, a Felician Sister for 71 years, died in the Blessed Mary Angela Care Center, Buffalo, NY, on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. The former Rita Skokowski was born on April 21, 1924, in Buffalo and was a member of St. Adalbert Parish. She entered the Immaculate Heart of Mary Province of the Felician Sisters on July 6, 1943, and professed perpetual vows on August 6, 1951. She graduated from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy, Buffalo, NY, and furthered her education at Mount St. Joseph Teachers College, now known as Medaille College in Buffalo, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

At the onset of her ministry, Sister Martinia spent 11 years caring for handicapped children at St. Rita's Home for Children, Getzville, NY. Afterward, she entered the field of Education and taught in Catholic elementary schools within the Diocese of Buffalo for a total of 28 years. She also taught Grade 3 at Transfiguration School in Rome, NY, for 3 years. She had a pleasant personality and as a teacher encouraged the children to be exact in their work and to study to their fullest potential.

Sister Martinia served as an elementary school principal for a total of 13 years. She served in this capacity at Resurrection School, Cheektowaga, NY; St. Patrick School, Salamanca, NY and St. Mary School, Batavia, NY. Her last involvement in Education was at St. Bernard School, Buffalo, NY, where she was a part-time assistant principal. At many parishes, she taught in the Religious Education Programs.

In August 1997, Sister Martinia began her ministry as a dining room director at the Villa Maria Infirmary, Buffalo, NY. As time went on, she began assisting the aged and infirm sisters in many different ways. She was kind and approachable toward them; performing many hidden services in her particular quiet fashion. She often insisted on helping others even after she herself became a patient in the Blessed Mary Angela Care Center in July, 2007. During her last years at the Center, she was a silent presence among the sisters.
